In flood-prone Bradford on Avon, the River Avon's repeated breaches brought the town to a standstill, with Weirside Mill's workshop area enduring severe flooding, reaching 2-meter water levels. Tragically, the property owners, Mr. & Mrs. Johnston, were away on holiday during this period, unaware of the damage until their return.

The Project

The town of Bradford on Avon faced unprecedented flooding challenges when the River Avon repeatedly breached its banks, disrupting the community and leading to significant damage at Weirside Mill’s workshop area. Water levels soared to a staggering 2 meters during the worst of the floods, with approximately 80,000 liters of water per hour inundating the building. In response, our team swiftly mobilized within 24 hours, installing two pumps, two battery packs, a drainage channel, and two gullies to efficiently address the flooding crisis, mitigating further damage and facilitating water removal.

The Challenges

  • The project faced the recurrent issue of the River Avon overflowing, causing widespread flooding in the vicinity
  • Weirside Mill’s workshop area suffered extensive damage as floodwaters surged to 2 meters, impacting vital equipment and workspaces
  • The absence of the property owners, Mr. & Mrs. Johnston, during the flooding added complexity to the project, delaying the response to the damage

Our Approach

In addressing the Weirside Mill flood remediation project, we faced the challenge of managing a substantial 80,000 liters of water per hour infiltrating the 160m² workshop space. To tackle this, we selected the NP750 pump range, with four units collectively delivering an 86,400-liter hourly discharge capacity. Our solution involved precise placement of drainage channels within recesses cut into the concrete slab alongside perimeter walls, along with trapped gullies in the floor, efficiently directing water to sump chambers. We incorporated two battery backup systems to ensure uninterrupted pump operation during power outages and installed high-level alarms for early warning of potential system overload. Additionally, we had a 3kva generator on standby, ready to connect to non-battery backup pumps for continuous system performance.
